Shirley Ann (Logan) Carter

June 21, 1935 ~ June 1, 2019 (age 83)

Shirley Ann (Logan) Carter, 83, died Saturday, June 1, 2019, in the care of Spring Creek Inn, a memory facility in Bozeman, where she spent the last five plus years.

She was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, June 21, 1935 to Robert Seth and Emma (Kadansky) Logan.  She moved as a young girl with her parents and two older brothers, to Livingston, Montana.  Their first home was on an island in the Yellowstone River just east of town.  Her brothers ferried them across in a small boat, hand over hand on a cable that was anchored on both sides of the river.  Shirley was educated in Livingston through the eighth grade.  As a young teen she met the love of her life, Keith Carter.  He met the approval of her “guardian” brothers, Robert and Harold and they were married in 1951.  Their first year was spent working on a ranch north west of White Sulfur Springs.  After that they moved back to Livingston, where they raised five children.  Keith worked for Eddy’s Bakery for 23 years, after it sold to Sweetheart Bakery; they moved back to White Sulphur Springs and purchased a supper club in 1978.  They worked hard together and made many friends in that community.  They helped establish the Arrowhead Meadows Golf Course on the south edge of town.

Three things Shirley loved and was good at, were cooking, sewing and painting, mostly oil and watercolor.  She always put on a meal for anyone that stopped by, in addition to preparing many fine meals for patrons at their supper club.  She sewed clothes for herself and five kids for special occasions and patched a mountain of pants as her 4 boys wore through the knees.  In the early 90’s after they sold the supper club, when she and Keith became snowbirds, she had developed a line of hand sewn purses that were quite popular between Montana and Arizona.  She always had a painting on her easel, waiting for a block of time to make a little more headway.  Many of her friends and family have some of her artwork on their walls, while others of us wish she had painted just one more.

She is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; stepfather and stepsister; and her husband; a daughter-in-law, Diane, the wife of Dan; and an infant grandchild Robert, the son of Mick and Terry.

She is survived by five children, Mick (Terry) Carter of Livingston, Dan (Annaliese) Carter of Bozeman, Dave (Patsy) Carter, of Livingston, Pam Shearer of Fort Morgan, CO, Doug (Kelly) Carter of Sundance, WY; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; as well as, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
