Hermena was born a twin with her brother Herman the seventh and eighth of twelve children raised on the family farm near Amsterdam. Hermena had come to Livingston as a youth to have an appointment with Dr. Kahle. Following the appointment she had to walk for a half-hour straight, for therapy, she took in Livingston and became smitten with the town. She had said; "Someday I would like to make Livingston my home". And she did, she moved over from Manhattan with a suitcase and five dollars in her pocket. She went into the Pioneer Nursing Home, asked for a job and was given one on the spot. She also worked for the Industrial Towel Company, as a house keeper and volunteered at the food pantry. Hermenas gift to the world was caring for others. She loved to take the elderly on errands, listen to their stories and tell stories back to them. She wanted those she cared for to know how sincere she was to be able to help them and spend time with them. Hermena was a self-made woman. She earned everything she ever had and was very frugal with her funds. Her life was about giving to others and helping others have a great day. At age 70 Hermena decided to take courses to pursue her GED. She was not afraid of a little opposition. Hermena had lived in Livingston until she needed a bit more assistance and moved to Belgrade to be closer to family in November of 2014. Blessed be her memory.
