Virginia (Hargrove) Carter. 89, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, family, service, and friendship. Virginia was born on July 10, 1936, in Livingston, Montana.
Virginia spent her childhood in the Shields Valley area, attending school in Wilsall and Clyde Park, and also spending a period of time attending school at Benbow, before graduating from high school in Livingston. It was there that she met the love of her life, Theodore Lawrence Carter. After their marriage, the couple moved to Bozeman, where Ted attended Montana State College and proudly played basketball for the Bobcats. Together they built a life centered on family, hard work, and service to their community.
Virginia worked at First Bank in Bozeman before beginning a long and rewarding career with Montana State University's 4-H Extension Service. She was known for her dedication, professionalism, and the many friendships she developed throughout her years of service.
An active member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Virginia devoted many years to the organization and proudly served in numerous offices. She valued the friendships, fellowship, and opportunities for service that Eastern Star provided.
Nothing brought Virginia greater joy than spending time with her family. Her home was a gathering place where everyone felt welcome. She especially loved holidays and family celebrations, often preparing large meals that brought together relatives and friends from near and far. The memories created around her table, filled with laughter; stories, and love, will remain treasured by all who shared them.
Virginia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Theodore Lawrence Carter; her son, Brad Carter; her parents, Steve and Alma Hargrove; her sister; Betty Hargrove Johnson; her brother. Roy Hargrove of Clyde Park; and her sister. Jackie Hargrove, who passed away as a young child.
She is survived by her daughter. Shawna Nielson (Bryan) of Bozeman, Montana, and their children, Casey and Lilly; her son, Steve Carter (Tanaya) of Belgrade, Montana, and their son. Keaton; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Virginia will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, unwavering devotion to her family, and her ability to make everyone feel at home. Her gentle spirit, warm smile, and loving heart touched countless lives and leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.
In accordance with her wishes, no formal services will be held. Virginia wished simply to be reunited with her beloved husband, Ted. Her family takes comfort in knowing they are together once again.
A life well lived, a family well loved, and a memory forever cherished.
