John P. Hochmuht, age 99, of Livingston passed away at home on Thursday July 31, 2025 . Cremation has taken place and per his wishes his remains will be scattered in a place special to him.
John was born on March 5, 1926 at home in Livingston to Otto and Rosina (Roth) Hochmuht. John attended Muir Rural School and Bozeman High School. John started his railroad career in 1942 for the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1944 he entered the Army and served in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and went back to work on the railroad. He served in the National Guard for 5 years.
John married Delores Meuleners in 1949. They had twin sons Geof and Greg and one daughter Joan. In 1980 John married his forever partner Judy (Winters) Kirk. Their love took them through 44 ½ years of wonderful adventures. Camping, hunting, fishing and snowmobiling with friends. He grew a great garden and loved working in his shop.
John retired in 1981 with 37 ½ years with the Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern Railroads. He served as the Pipe and Tin Shop foreman. He was also a member of the BN Search and Rescue.
John was a life member of the Livingston Elks #246, The American Legion Post No 23 and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Rubin, Edwin and Bill Batchelder; sisters Rose Jones, Connie Peterson and Freda Widaman; and daughter-in-law Monika Nill.
John is survived by his wife Judy; sons Greg and Geof; daughter Joan (Tom) Wold. Grandchildren Nikki Davison; Shaun (Jennifer) Wold; John (Andrea) Wold; Kasey (Blake) Slater; Kelli (Ben) Lippert; great grandchildren; Will Davison; Archer and Alden Wold; Keaton and Owen Wold; Penny and Hank Lippert; special niece Norma Ardesson and her family; and other nieces and nephews and family members.
