Thomas H. Danaher, MD

August 11, 1932 — January 15, 2022

Thomas Hanchett Danaher, M.D., died on January 15, 2022, at 89 years of age in Livingston, Montana, his home for the past 28 years. Born in Torrington, Connecticut on August 11, 1932, to Dr. Thomas J. Danaher and Helen Virginia Barrett, he grew up with a love of sailing, water skiing and horseback riding. He graduated from Yale University and Yale Medical School. In 1953, Tom met his future wife, Nancy Jean Beardsley, on a blind date and they were inseparable ever since. Tom and Nancy traveled the world. His career began with the U.S. Army Medical Corps which brought them first to Germany and later to Afghanistan and Haiti, two countries where Tom volunteered his medical services. After Germany, he returned to his birthplace to forge a distinguished career as a general surgeon and to raise a family of five children. Upon retirement, Tom and Nancy moved to Montana where they bought property outside Livingston. Tom loved working the land around their home. In subsequent years the couple traveled extensively, visiting over 60 countries, sometimes accompanied by their children and grandchildren. Tom was predeceased by his son, Thomas (Eva Britt-Makitalo); daughter, Dr. Julie Danaher; and a brother, William J. Danaher. He is survived by Nancy and two daughters, Suellen (Peter) Helinski, and Sara Jane Danaher; foster son, Oliver Toupense; son-in-law, Philip Kloot; and seven grandchildren, Emily (Alex), Charlotte, Theodore, Samson, Sasha, Lucie (Sam) and Lucas. His children, grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews and many friends will mourn his passing. The family will remember his love of reading (from Leo Tolstoy to John Grisham), art, ballet, movies, and opera. He enjoyed Wilcoxson's ice cream, cheering on his beloved New York Mets, and long hikes and cross-country skiing in Montana. His character included his love of helping others, his patience, his modesty, his zest for life and for his love of his wife, Nancy. A service will take place at a future date. Donations in memory of Tom can be made to Friends of the Livingston-Park County Public Library, PO Box 2072, Livingston, MT 59047, or Hopital Albert Schweitzer in Deschapelles, Haiti, https://hashaiti.org/take-action/ways-to-give/donate/.
