Henry was born on December 19, 1927 in Toms Creek, Wise County, Virginia. He was the second youngest child of 17 children born to John B. Floyd Counts, 11 being from his first marriage and six from his second marriage to Margaret E. (Deel). Henry grew up attending Ervinton High School while living in rural Dickenson County, VA.

He entered the United States Army on March 15, 1946. He served mostly Stateside in Alaska. During his time of service, he worked as the company Admin Clerk, he was awarded the Victory Service Medal and rose to the rank of Corporal. He was honorably discharged on March 14, 1948.

Henry returned to Virginia where he completed his high school education. He was married and to that union was blessed with three children, Jack, Debbie, and Linda.

Henry relocated to Montana in 1953. Here he made a home in one of Aunt Bessie’s cabins and he began employment with the railroad and worked for Burlington Northern for 36 years. He was a dedicated worker serving as a materials clerk for most his career.

While Henry was visiting relatives in Virginia, he was introduced to a lovely lady with five lovely daughters. Love was in the air that day… After meeting in July of 1970, and a short, long-distance courtship, Margaret and the girls traveled to Livingston to see what they thought of it here. They never left; and Margaret and Henry Jackson Counts were united in marriage on September 26, 1970. They would relocate to Burlington, IA when the railroad pulled out of Livingston in 1986. In 1988 they returned to Livingston when Henry retired.

Henry did not care for sitting around so in retirement he worked at several fuel stations and then for Northern Energy Propane. He, Margaret and the family enjoyed many trips back to Virginia every year to visit family. They would always take a different route, to see as much of the United States as they could. Henry appreciated music, especially bluegrass. Henry played guitar and would get-together with his crew every week and sometimes play into the early morning. He loved to take the family camping in the old school bus, taking trips to the Park and going square dancing with Margaret.

Henry was a one of a kind, gentle – man. He was caring and kind, just loved everyone he met. He wanted for others to be happy and was very much go with the flow. Hey, he had five daughters in the house at one time, the guy had amazing patience. His love and support made us, as his daughters, who we are today. We miss you but know that you and mom are together, smiling looking down on us.
