James William "Jim" Marshall

July 21, 1959 ~ October 19, 2019 (age 60)

Obituary

James William “Jim” Marshall, age 60, of Clyde Park, MT died Saturday, October 19, 2019 due to a farming accident.

He was born in Oxnard, California July 21,1959 along with his four siblings.  When he was 11 years old his parents died in a plane crash while flying the family on a short trip.  Afterwards Jim lived with various relatives and attended St. Anthony's Seminary boarding school in Santa Barbara, CA.  It was during that time he developed his love for surfing and wood working, and numerous life-long relationships with his ocean hippie friends.

Jim moved to Bozeman in 1990 and opened the Bozeman Hostel as well as mastering cabinetry work.  He loved anything related to mountains and became a proficient rock climber, backcountry skier and river kayaker.

He married the love of his life, Barb Urie, in 1999. Their first date was a mountain bike ride near Ross Peak in the Bridgers.  In 2000 they moved to Clyde Park which Jim would from then on call his “forever home.”  He loved the Shields Valley and its community very much. He was a voracious reader, a prankster, always willing to help anyone who asked, and he started a lot of great projects.

He raised sheep, trained driving horses and loved many friends and family fiercely.  Jim's greatest happiness came from his three children. He worked tirelessly to remodel the farmhouse that the kids were raised in and watched every movement of his kids’ lives with immense pride. He attended all of their sports games and school functions and was able to watch his daughter and oldest son graduate from high school. The last couple of decades of Jim's life were truly amazing for him and he wouldn't have asked for more. Recently Jim said, “If I died today, I would be completely content with my life.”

Jim leaves behind his three children, Marissa, Jack and Hazen and his wife, Barb. His siblings, John, Tom (Karen), David and Kathleen. His in-laws, Ellen Urie, Wendi Urie and Mike Cimonetti, and Kelly, Abby and Caroline Elder in Vermont. Also, countless amazing friends and neighbors.

He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Elizabeth Marshall, his father-in-law, Richard Urie and a long list of beloved dogs.

While we are devastated, we know that Jim was not afraid of death and had a strong belief that his soul would transfer on to something or somewhere. We will always be watching for glimpses of him.
